2nd partner meeting

We had our 2nd partner meeting from 13 – 15 March 2011. More than 13 participants from 11 European nations took part in the event to present projects and ideas under the slogan "Multiply Know-how - Together strong for 2011" and to identify potential. Through our conversations and discussions we were able to strenghten our good cooperation with our partners and it also supported the relationship among our international partners. During the days, we introduced new products and marketing activities were launched. The meeting were completet with an additional program of culture, sports and adventure. With our DESOI partner meetings we would like to expand the international injection business to find new solutions for a successful future.

Gotthard Base Tunnel – shortly before the cut-through

Faido multifunctional station with lane changes and emergency stops

At the end of 2009 approximately 95 percent of the 57 km long Gotthard Tunnel were excavated. The big day will probably take place in November 2010: Switzerland will celebrate the main cut-through with all tunnel builders and miners in the Gotthard Base Tunnel!

The Faido section with the multifunctional station constitutes an essential part of the entire Gotthard Tunnel. For geological reasons, the tunnel intersection and the emergency stop "West" were shifted more than 616 m towards the south. Large, unexpected deformations occurred at the beginning of the TBM drive. These deformations lie in the range of the residual geological risk.

Deformed sections were broken away and expanded to the original excavation dimension. The new system for securing the excavated space consists of an up to 30 cm thick shotcrete layer, up to 8 m long injection anchors and 2 mesh layers.

The campaign to explore the rockfall in the west tunnel has reached an advanced stage. The excavation and support work on the injection niche has been completed. The gel injections for the protection of the TBM have been successfully inserted. The drillings for the cement injections are now being made. The reverse drive has reached its planned length of 85 m. The specialized groups for managing the rockfall are continuously engaged in the further optimization of the working procedures.

Tunnel inside temperatures of up to 46 degrees Celsius needed to be coped with and cooled down to an acceptable level of 28 degrees Celsius for the tunnel builders and miners. An ingenious water and air exchange system assumes this task.

In parallel with the driving and restoration work, the interior construction work is ongoing in the Faido multifunctional station.

DESOI GmbH is a member of the Swiss Tunnelling Society. Within the bounds of the Swiss Tunnel Congress 2010, the excursion to the Faido multifunctional station took place.

50 years of STUVA Inc. from 1960 until 2010 - past meets future

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of STUVA Inc., on 17 and 18 June 2010 the jubilee conference took place in Düsseldorf. This big event was attended by more than 500 domain experts from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, region Hungary and other countries. DESOI GmbH is a long-standing member of STUVA.

It all started at the beginning of the 50ies when the entrepreneur Karl Schmitz-Scholl (sole managing partner of the foodstuff companies Tengelmann and Wissoll- Schokoladenwerke) presented the vision of an underground traffic system for the Rhine-Ruhr area. One of the first activities of STUVA was the realization of an idea competition in 1961 which became known under the name "Schmitz-Scholl-Wettbewerb".

The participants from the "Young Forum“ gave once again interesting and appealing lectures on the fascination of tunnelling. Different aspects were addressed with a view to the future of underground construction:

  • future possibilities and limits of mechanized tunnel driving technology
  • completely automatic unmanned trains
  • future safety requirements

Review and outlook on 50 years of STUVA

This included the award of the "STUVA Young Engineers Prize" for the best paper delivered at the Young Forum. Conclusions from STUVA's past were drawn and, at the same time, a link to the important topic of the future of energy was provided.

The importance of the individual for the handling of such highly demanding engineering projects was highlighted.

Quotation by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Günter Girnau: (Honorary Member of the Board of STUVA Inc.) "Even in professional life, mutual trust is an extremely important (success) component. It takes a (very) long time to gain it, but it is gambled away quickly!“.

The last part of the event on the first day was dedicated to the "present" and dealt with the currently largest building project of the subway construction of the Wehrhahn Line in Düsseldorf. Interesting technical excursions followed, among other things regarding the access shaft freezing at Kaufhof on the Königsallee.

The festive evening was primarily intended to offer the opportunity for personal meetings. Furthermore, it looked back on 50 eventful years of STUVA.

Conclusion: It was a highly successful event.

The Wehrhahn Line subway project in Düsseldorf

The Wehrhahn Line increases the mobility within Düsseldorf. With a future-oriented traffic infrastructure, the new city undertunnelling increases the attractiveness of the metropolis on the Rhine. The route network to be constructed in the years to come supplements and optimizes the existing route network. A special challenge is the undertunnelling of Kaufhof by means of trenchless drive using the freezing method.

There are five good reasons for the Wehrhahn Line:

  • new, attractive usage of the road space in the inner city
  • barrier-free and even faster and more punctual local public transport
  • better subway connections ensure an enhanced traffic flow below ground in the tunnel and on the street
  • urban development areas are optimally connected with the centre of the state <//span>Düsseldorf gets a better connection to the regional network of Deutschen Bahn.

DESOI is certified according to the internationally recognized ISO 9001:2008 standard.

The process and system oriented approach to the topic of quality management and continuous improvement which has already become lived practical experience at DESOI can therefore be implemented even more efficiently.

The ISO 9001:2008 standard allows organizations of all types to introduce and regularly check a management system adapted to their needs and local conditions.
